Here’s Our Top 10 Items We Think Every Parent Actually Needs
If you’re anything like us when you were pregnant, you’ve lost track of the number of YouTube videos you’ve watched on ‘The MUST have items for every new parent’, you’ve followed every mum blogger on Instagram, combing through their content to see what products they swear by for their babies. But with new baby products coming onto the market every week, it can be confusing to know what you really do need in preparation for bub. I sat down with my First Time Mum (FTM - you’ll see this acronym thrown around a lot) friends to chat about what items we believed really did get us through the newborn period. Here are our top 10 must haves.
A reliable car seat that fitted our car
Having a reliable and safe car seat for your newborn is important. You’ll be spending a lot of time together going from your initial doctors checkups, to regular mum group catch-ups. But, depending on whether you have a small hatch-back car, a 6ft 4 Husband, or have a preference for a capsule over a car seat, deciding what to go with can be tricky.
Capsules are a great option for newborns up until about 12 months, depending on how big your bub is. A lot of parents opt for a capsule over a car seat initially because many of them can click straight into your pram frame, making transferring a sleeping baby very easy! If you’re thinking of starting out with a capsule, we love the Maxi Cosi Mico 12 LX
Convertible car seats are also a great option and can be used from birth in rear-facing. When bub is at least 6 months old and big enough, they can then be switched to front facing and used until 4 to years of age, depending on the seat. Not sure where to start? A great option is the Infasecure Achieve More. This seat can actually be used up until 8 years of age and uses active bamboo to help keep bub cool.
A pram that matched our lifestyle
Firstly, we need to talk about the Baccani Pletora Plus. Why? Well, not many prams have a 2-in-1 bassinet to seat option. We really can’t get past this. It’s simple, easy and effortless. Words that are music to a mum's ears.
If you’re thinking you’re wanting a beautiful pram that is light, easy to fold and has newborn clips to add your capsule to, then we’d opt for the Edwards and Co Oscar Mx.
Twin mamas or planning ahead? A tandem pram is ALWAYS a great option with 2 bubs on the go. We love the Baccani Lusso Double Pram for this. If you’re wanting to use the tandem pram with a newborn, remember to always have your bassinet attached for bub.
A safe place for baby to sleep
When you bring your baby home from the hospital, a big focus of your new life will be feeding and sleeping. The Edwards and Co Snuzpod 4 Bedside Crib is a favourite for a few reasons. It has a gentle reflux incline option, the liner is breathable and washable and it fits perfectly next to your own bed to make feeding and checking on bub simple.
If you have a bigger home and are wanting the option to move your bassinet around with you during the day, then the Love N Care Traversina Sleeper is a winner.
Keeping your baby snug and comfortable is a very high priority. Swaddling them with muslin or cloth wraps can take a lot of time, especially during those midnight feeds. That’s why so many parents opt for a zip swaddle. Make sure you check for the ‘TOG’ you purchase, to make sure it’s appropriate for your climate. We love Ergopouch for their soft fabrics and cute patterns.
A change table and mat
We will let you in on a little secret. When it comes to changing nappies, you’ll want a station that allows for the job to be done quickly, and with as little clean up as possible. It’s for this reason that more and more parents are opting for water resistant change mats. Why? Because if there’s a mess, it’s a lot quicker and easier to clean up than having to wash a change mat cover. The Leander Matty Change Mat is quickly becoming very popular. It sits easily on top of your change table, or can be used on any flat surface and stored away.
Somewhere comfortable to feed baby
A comfortable chair for feeding, burping or rocking your bubba is always on our lists. When they become older, it can then be transformed into your favourite spot to sit and read a quiet book together. Want something that looks cute but is still functional? We love the Love n Care Icarus Rocking Chair and the Valco Baby Eurobell Glider.
Somewhere safe for baby to go during the day (think if you’re busting to go to the bathroom)
Now, there’s going to be a time when you need to put your tiny bubba down so you can safely use the bathroom, put the washing on or give your arms a break.
If you’re looking for an option that goes the extra mile of soothing bub, then you really can’t go past the 4 Moms Rockaroo. It has 5 speeds and big motions to help your little one off to sleep .
Another favourite is the Baby Bjorn Bouncer. It’s comfortable for bub, doesn’t take up too much room, and can be easily folded and taken with you on the go.
Wrap carrier for hands free
We love carriers for hands-free moments. It allows washing to be done, dinner to be eaten, and general life maintenance to be accomplished. A lot of parents also find that wrap carriers are an amazing option to help their babies settle and sleep during the day. One of our all-time favourites is the Moby Evolution Wrap that can be used from newborn.
A reliable baby bag
Voted the best baby bag in Australia in 2020, the Oioi backpack is a favourite for a lot of reasons. It has 8 compartments, including 2 insulated for bottles and food. It’s also water resistant and fits a 15” Macbook in the main compartment.
Now, this isn’t necessarily a baby bag, but we really want to mention pram caddies. It’s where you’ll end up storing your phone, keys, snacks, hand sanitiser and sunglasses on your walks and outings. We really love a good pram caddy because it allows for you to access your things quickly and easily, and means you don’t need to take your whole baby bag with you if you’re just zipping down to the shops. Again, you really can’t go past Oioi.
A comfortable bath for baby
Bath time can actually be a really enjoyable experience for everyone. It’s usually a time when bub is calm and quiet, and it’s the perfect opportunity to bond. If you’re wanting to bath your little one inside your own bath at home, then we would recommend the Angelcare Bath Support. It’s ergonomically designed so that you can place your baby hands-free in the bath, allowing you to connect with them instead of worrying about holding them up.
Another favourite for a lot of parents is the multi-award winning Shnuggle Bath. Designed to make bath time less stressful, the Shnuggle Bath is suitable right from birth. The clever bum bump helps support even the tiniest baby in an upright position, offering a more enjoyable and comfortable bathtime for babies right up to 12 months plus.
